Features and Benefits
  • Train your outfielders in a sequential and progressive way that players will understand!
  • Structure indoor outfield drills that will address all aspects of outfield play!
  • Teach execution of special situations like extra base hits and balls against the fence, giving your players an edge!

Drills for Skills

Many coaches must start their training season indoors due to winter weather and all the way into each spring season, all teams face inclement weather. Teaching skills inside therefore becomes paramount for success.

Three-time national championship coach Brian Brewer will give coaches the tools needed in this video to help you build fundamentally sound outfielders while you are forced indoors, helping you maximize your practice time.

Coach Brewer starts off the video with a series of progressive drills to teach basic stance, fielding position and footwork. Staying athletic, taking good angles, and using efficient footwork are all emphasized in these drills. If your outfielders take bad routes and poor angles these drills will show you how to improve their skills in a step-by-step fashion.

Next, Brewer moves to ground ball and fly ball drills. Special situations  - like dealing with the fence or other obstructions, making sliding catches, and dealing with strong wind causing bad reads - are all taught and drilled in this part of the video. Very few outfielders know how to handle these situations well and if your players are well-prepared, your team can save runs and win games.

Handling any situation

Finally, you will see Coach Brewer take his players through an indoor outfield practice. The three key points of:

  •  ground ball position,
  • "stay outside and catch inside" and
  • "fast feet early"
  • are just a few of the teaching points used to help players learn the proper techniques throughout this practice. Seeing Coach Brewer work with his players demonstrating how the drills will look in team practice as well as showing the best teaching points to use as part of each drill is a highlight of this video.

Twelve drills are included in this presentation. In one of the drills - the Bad Read Drill - players are taught how to "float their hips" when they make a bad initial read and how to "turn with purpose" when strong wind or a very poor read has happened.

By mastering this skill your players can prevent multiple base mistakes in the outfield on these types of plays.

Coach Brewer wraps up with an explanation on the importance of "explaining the why" and teaching in a sequential fashion.

This excellent video will help coaches at all levels develop strong outfield play even when they are forced to practice indoors. Championships are won at practice and this video will help you improve your practices and move one step closer to your next title!
